ANEURIN BEVAN IN PLACE OF FEAR PDF

Early life[ edit ] Aneurin Bevan was born on 15 November , died 6 July at 32 Charles Street in Tredegar , Monmouthshire , he left school and worked as a working-class at mining town. David Bevan was born in Tredegar but his family had originally hailed from Carmarthenshire , and he followed his own father into the mines, starting work at am each day and returning home late in the evening. He was adept at construction and added several modern features when the family moved to 7 Charles Street, installing the first gas stove in the street, an inside toilet and running hot water. David Bevan had been a supporter of the Liberal Party in his youth, but was converted to socialism by the writings of Robert Blatchford in The Clarion and joined the Independent Labour Party. It was around this time that he first "reject[ed] his chapel upbringing" and became an atheist. He developed a severe stammer as a child and, according to his younger sister Myfanwy, became "a lonely chap", due to the need to shy away from the attention it brought him.

I leave that nonsense to the writers of romantic biographies. A young miner in a South Wales colliery, my concern was with the one practical question: Where does power lie in this particular State of Great Britain, and how can it be attained by the workers? No doubt this is the same question as the one to which the savants of political theory are fond of addressing themselves, but there is a world of difference in the way it shaped itself for young workers like myself.

It was no abstract question for us. The circumstances of our lives made it a burning, luminous mark of interrogation.

Where was power and which the road to it? It will be seen at once that the question formulated itself in different fashion for us than it would have done in a new, pioneering society or in the mind of someone equipped by a long formal education. Socially and economically he was in many ways a man ahead of his time. As the events of December 12th in the UK have unfortunately reinforced, the lifting of millions of people out of poverty, the revivification of the welfare state, and the expansion of social justice are easily set aside by the populace at large once they have been whipped into a right-wing nationalistic fervour. I only pray that the dark days ahead may eventually see this country come back around to the humanity expressed on these pages.
