Kelly Kelleher is an idealistic, twenty-six-year-old good girl when she meets the Senator at a Fourth of July party. In a brilliantly woven narrative, we enter her past and her present, her mind and her body as she is fatally attracted to this older man, this hero, this soon-to-be-lover. Kelly becomes the very embodiment of the vulnerable, romantic dreams of bight and brave women, drawn to the power that certain men command - at a party that takes on the quality of a surreal nightmare; in a tragic care ride that we hope against hope will not end as we know it must end.

Plot summary[ edit ] The book begins with Kelly Kelleher in a car that is plunging into mucky, swampy, "black water. John and her lover, Ray Annick. She is planning to stay with them for the weekend. Buffy is the "more worldly" of the two young women; the irony in this is that it is completely out of character for Kelly to get herself into such a situation. Ray has invited "The Senator" about whom Kelly wrote her graduate thesis. He immediately is interested in her sexually; he pays attention solely to her as the party drags on, and they discuss their common political beliefs. He follows her to the beach where he kisses her, and then invites her to come to his hotel with him on the ferry.

George Bush is President; a lot of Democrats are vying for position to run against him. However, the Senator, though never named, is recognizable not only as a certain politician from a big political family with a lot of money but also as a certain modern type, the man with power and charisma on the prowl for susceptible women. He could be any one of half a dozen newsworthy men of the recent past, and in fact the question of who this particular fictional Senator is, though we will inevitably think of The One, is finally irrelevant. For "Black Water" is about the passenger on that fatal journey. She is Kelly Kelleher, baptismal name Elizabeth Anne.
